Local

Exposes a port accessible by the remote machine through a port in the local machine

  ssh -L localport:remotehost:remoteport user@host

Remote (or reverse)

Exposes a port accessible by the local machine through a port in the remote machine

  ssh -R remoteport:lhost:localport user@host

Dynamic

Creates a SOCKS proxy that sends all traffic through the remote host.

  ssh -D port user@host

The flag -C can be used to allow compression, useful for text transfer, not so useful for binary data.
